$emiotics in Mot!on P!cture: Theme in Relationship

Semiotics used in Visual advert

Semiotics in a way is age old representation of matter just through actions rather than words.

Conveying a message through symbols was the first the first step in language in all civilization. Such
is the significance of action, are to be more precise symbolism.

Here is a television commercial as an example to convey a subject through the matter of Semiotics –
Symbols.

$emiotics in Mot!on P!cture: Indian Rupee

Indian is a (Indian) tamil movie released in 1996. It is directed by acclaimed Indian Director Shankar.
Plot of the movie revolves around an oldman who fights against the bribery in Indian Economy. To show the depth of the story line, director Shankar used an ironical comparison using a currency note.

A particular scene in which the old man Sethupathy and his daughter enjoy by making paper boats besides a lake, when the papers get over the daughter gets upset and to make her happy the old man Sethupathy folds an Indian currency note to make a boat!

Later, when the girl meets a fire accident and she gets admitted in a hospital the doctor asks bribe to consult her (sethupathy’s daughter), which was an upcoming negative and pathetic situation among the government officials (1990s). Being a veteran freedom fighter he refuses and stands against this. His strict policies and patriotism is been emphasized powerfully by these two scenes in coordination with film elements love, daughter and patriotism.

It was an amazing comparison!

When the paper gets over she upset on that.

Then Sethupathy finds a solution by taking 500 rupees cash
from his pocket and makes boat on that - to make her happy.

Boats made out of Indian currency notes.

(In this song director Shankar explained the beautiful love between a father and the daughter.
Refer the timeline 1.19 to 1.28 in the song sequence. The context of using Indian Money as paper boats.)

An Important thing regarding the indian revolution on 2011:

Though movie Indian released in the 1996, the lead character Sethupathy was been compared by Anna Hazare, a real fighter against Indian Government corruption and black money in 2011(recently last year). Impact of the (fictional) movie character reflected through the real personality in the society. Above visual instances are few examples where the film maker used the technique of semiotics to give the strong message.

I too remember when this movie released in all over the country, I was doing my Third grade in school days. But impact of some particular scenes in this movie reflected in some of my visual works.

The character without hat is exact fictional character "Sethupathy" and other personality
is the real character Mr.Anna Hazare.
Both the characters are merged with Indian Flag.
